“When would NOW be a good time to start”

Taken from the book, “Create The Life You Want” – by J.D Mo’orea

I got the title for this blog, from a personal development teacher, by the name of Chris Howard in 2007. I was attending his three-day seminar in London, when I heard this statement and instantly fell in love with it.

Ever since I heard those words, my friends will never complain about their lives to me, unless they are prepared to hear me say that statement to them. A friend might say, “I’m so fat” or “I hate my job,” to which I always reply, “so when would now (emphasising the now) be a good time to start?”

The first time they hear me say it, they usually pause for a moment, tilt their head slightly to one side, like a dog looking confused as they ponder what I said. This is usually followed by a knowing smile and a sarcastic comment from them. Either way, it has the desired effect of getting the point across.

There is no point in complaining about things, unless you’re going to do something about it and the best time to do so, is now. All change happens in an instant. If you want to change your body, your relationship, your happiness, your finances, or anything; the first step is to decide. The Latin meaning for the word “decide” is literally to “cut off.” In other words, to cut off, from any other option.

During the seminar in 2007, Chris Howard told a story of when he and his brother were young, his parents would hide their Christmas presents in the top of the wardrobe in the weeks leading up to Christmas. When their parents were busy, the boys would grab a chair and climb into the cupboard, to see if they could guess what their presents were going to be. Once they had the present in their hands, they would hold it, shake it, smell it and feel it, to see if they could see what they were going to get in the future (Christmas Day). Quite often, the only way they could really tell what was inside, was to somehow peel open a small part of the wrapping at one end, so they could see inside.

The moral of this story, was that it was only when they looked inside the present, that they could see into the future. Right now, is the only moment that you have control over, so make a decision, decide to “cut-off” from any other possibility and you will find, that the future suddenly looks a whole lot brighter.

And remember to ask yourself….

When would NOW, be a good time to change?
